Forbes Review: "Bookseller Amazon became the Web’s biggest music merchant the moment it entered the category; its site has partially earned the distinction. Genre pages and editor’s picks offer pretty good original comment and a sprinkling of the music press. Reviews by other customers are largely a waste, though. An extensive listing of essential recordings by hundreds of artists across all genres will spark countless arguments: any ranking that puts the Beatles’ "White Album" above Revolver needs a serious rethink. There are even errors of fact (contrary to Amazon, Louis Prima’s wildest Capitol sides are available on disc). Lots of other editorial goodies, plus plenty of free downloads from the likes of Lou Reed, Pat Metheny and Yo La Tengo. BEST: Well-organized genre pages, and the essential album picks are fun to debate. WORST: A hip-to-be-square superstore mentality that with a straight face anoints AC/DC’s latest as 'our fave.'" Macworld Review: "Amazon has the best customer service of any large-scale (yes, it is large-scale now!) store, real or virtual, hands down. It's even been known to mail a prepaid-return box to customers who changed their mind after a CD shipped. Plus, a quick, but by no means comprehensive, check confirmed that Amazon is usually less expensive than its main rivals in the music world (CDNow and Barnes & Noble) and adds valuable extra info about how long each item will take to ship. Amazon offers one gift-wrapping option for CDs and can include a personal message on the packing slip." |

Barnes & Noble www.bn.com |
Forbes Review:
BEST: Stellar genre pages make this a browsing pleasure. WORST: Not many editorial flourishes beyond strong basic content. |

Forbes Review: "Once you find your favorite artist on CDnow the fun has just begun. Many fun options await like discographies with full track listings and often song samples. By clicking through the "Related Artists" feature on CDnow, we found that there are "six degrees of seperation" between Britney Spears and Johnny Cash. CDs, cassete tapes minidiscs and even vinyl LPs (sorry, no 8-tracks) are available at this bubble gum factory for music lovers. You can search by artist, album title or song title and even make advance orders. Browsing an entire genre is a little difficult but despite the site's emphasis on pop music, classical and jazz CDs are extremely well organized and cross-referenced. Track listings are included for most in print recordings and often feature song samples. The "album advisor" feature merely reports what others are buying and probably shouldn't be taken too seriously. BEST: Lots of Real Audio & MPEG song samples along with trustworthy reviews take much of the guesswork out of buying new music. WORST: Obscure titles are often on backorder." Macworld Review: "Runner-up CDNow does have one cool feature that Amazon lacks: you can make your own compilation CD of your favorite songs–kind of like those "mix tapes" you made in high school. It's definitely worth checking out. |

AllMusic www.allmusic.com |
Forbes Review: "The Web’s motherlode of music info. Search
by artist, album, song, style or label. Results turn up authoritative,
encyclopedic entries with serious essays and record-by-record reviews,
including lots of out-of-print stuff. Arguably the best way to shop for
music on the Web is to bone up on your choices here, then use a shopping
bot like Evenbetter.com to find the best price. Also links to sister sites
All Movie Guide and All Game Guide.
BEST: Exhaustive, insightful info on everyone from Bach to the Beastie Boys. WORST: Genre breakdowns can be dizzying. What’s the difference between postbop, neo bop and modern bop?" |

eBay www.ebay.com |
Forbes Review: "The downsides to buying at auction are well
known: yes, you can easily overpay or get outgunned at the last minute,
and people have been burned by unscrupulous dealers. But face it—with no
online clearinghouse for music dealers, Ebay’s the next best thing.
Music is an especially rich category, with more than 200,000 items up for
bid. Patience and some research on market values will guide you to fair
prices—and even the occasional bargain—on musical collectibles across
all fields of interest: big band, psychedelia, show tunes, 8-tracks, 78s,
you name it. Browsing’s a breeze (great way to kill an evening), though
response could be better.
BEST: A treasure trove of hard-to-find and out-of-print items passes under the virtual gavel. WORST: This site can be habit forming." |

eMusic www.emusic.com |
Forbes Review: "The best in downloads, if that’s your
thing. Emusic offers 75,000 tracks available from 600 independent labels,
weighted somewhat toward youth-oriented music. Full albums cost $8.99,
single tracks are 99 cents. Like other download sites, there’s a
preponderance of emerging (translation: no-name) artists, but Elvis
Costello and Tom Waits albums are available, as are rarities from Phish
and exclusives from cultish types like Frank Black and John Doe. Genres
are well-organized into subcategories. No major jazz labels here; the
three Duke Ellington and two Louis Armstrong titles are all somewhat
obscure. Blues is a bit better, with decent collections from Buddy Guy,
Elmore James and more. Site also incorporates Rollingstone.com, with
access to the magazine’s deep archives, and DownBeatJazz.com, an
estimable jazz news source.
BEST: Twelve full Elvis Costello albums. WORST: Searching by artist is cumbersome and the sub-genre pages could be better fleshed out." |

Insound www.insound.com
|
Forbes Review: "Insound.com is an indie fan’s dream,
although their stock is not limited to that. If you’re into electonica,
surf revival or post-punk, then this is the place to go. Insound offers
regular chats with featured artists, a collection of downloadable music
videos, the obligatory MP3 section, and a bulletin board section. More
innovative features include articles from popular industry ‘zines and
“Tour Support,” special offers of promotional CDs made by bands to
promote their tours exclusive to Insound. The site is pleasantly designed
(although the search engine is way too finicky), although it lacks the
more sophisticated ordering and browsing features of the larger sites.
BEST: Specialization – Insound knows this corner of the music biz inside and out and provides the fan with a lot of insider info and quality recommendations. WORST: The flip side of specialization – Insound doesn’t offer the kinds of discounts and editorial content on more mainstream music that other sites have." |

++ | www.rhino.com |
Forbes Review: "Kitsch and camp are the hallmark of Rhino
Records (reissue specialist, and a must-stop-site for pop culture mavens).
Eclectic is the word that applies here. Not only has Rhino kept the entire
Monkees catalog in print (over 50 items in stock, including videos), but
recent boxed sets include 4-CD sets of “Doo Wop” music and 60’s
“garage rock.” Although Rhino products usually cheaper on other sites,
their site is a fun place to visit and browse well-chosen collections of
oldies and not so oldies. Record collectors and armchair musicologists
will find full liner and track notes entertaining as well. Limited edition
samplers of its music catalog, "Rhino Handmades," available only
on the web. Rhino Video selections often run along the same tastes. Leave
it to Rhino to release a "Walking Tall" boxed set of the cheesy
70’s trilogy featuring Joe Don Baker southern sheriff Buford T. Pusser.
BEST: There isn't a more fun music site on the web. WORST: Not too many bargains." |

Forbes Review: "You can download popular music almost anywhere on the web today. What separates musicmaker.com from other custom-CD maker/MP3 sites are its jazz and classical music sections. Search the classical section by your favorite composer, and then download your favorite pieces played by your favorite performers. What record label can offer that kind of freedom? BEST: A wide variety of Jazz and Classical selections is the site's hidden strength. WORST: Most of the rock/alternative & hip hop tracks are available pretty much anywhere. Dull selection." |

Ultimate
Band List www.ubl.com
|
Forbes
Review:
"With the richest mix of information of any site yet
seen, the Ultimate Band List is a haven for musicians and fans alike. Any
search via the direct link to the authoritative All-Music Guide turns up an
informed bio, a fairly complete annotated discography and spot-on
recommendations. The site also offers the best-ever collection of links to
official and fan websites of the artists. Other features include online
chat, free & pay MP3 downloads, a website resource for everything from
musicians to record labels to radio stations, and a musicians-only page
where unsigned bands can even upload songs on to the site.
BEST: Despite the incredible collection of music-related links, the site is very user friendly. A great tool for musicians. WORST: The page is junked up with blinking ads and response is a little slow." |
